I need to teach about the relationship between Sun, Moon, and Earth. I would like to get some ideas of how to start this. I believe that I should start with the layer of the atmosphere, move into seasons then go out to into space. I want to start this Wednesday of next week with only three and half weeks of time to cover this. Please help!

Hi Shontell! If you are concentrating on the relationship between Sun, Moon, and Earth and you have limited time it might be a better strategy to start with the sun and work towards Earth and solar system. This will give you an opportunity to outline the relationship among all the planets of the solar system just briefly and then you can concentrate on the Earth-Moon-Sun relationship including how the tilt of the Earth is responsible for the seasons and how the Moon was originally part of the Earth cast out into space and how the Moon acts as an anchor for our orbit. It also gives you a great opportunity to introduce the Math part of STEM into the class, when you introduce elliptical orbits and why you only see one side of the moon even though it revolves and rotates. I would be afraid that with limited time and the complexity of the Earth spheres, you might never get to the big picture, so to speak. Once you establish the generalities of the solar system relationships, it makes the Earth-Moon-Sun relationships, to me, easier to grasp. There are a lot of resources out there to help you, as well. Thanks James. I've always started on the surface of the Earth when I taught Earth Science. Of course, that was order my district wanted it taught. Now that I'm in Physical Science after so manys in Earth Science, I just wanted to be sure which path would give the best insight. My district is in the middle of restructing the curriculum (I'm making lessons up as I go), so I'm a little shy on how I should approach the particular topic. Thanks for you ideas. I will start in space and work my way back towards Earth and see how the works.

Hi Shontell. I hope it works out well. Let me know. In my school, in Earth Science, we had space science before Earth science and it worked out pretty well. Maybe it's just a matter of curriculum mapping but I found the kids were really stimulated with space and NASA and it charged them up. We did rocks and minerals after space and they seemed to make the connection better about why we had different minerals and rocks and how density powered the rock cycle and how micrometeorites mimic the Rock Cycle on Earth. We talked a little about fossils and used "Your Inner Fish" a bit, as well. Sometimes walking backwards is good because you can see where you've been...:)
