Science Integrated Literacy

Hello All!

My name is Yessica and I am in my first semester of Student Teaching. I am currently in a dual language Kindergarten classroom at a school that is putting a lot of its focus in reading. Since our students are doing a lot of corrective reading in their English class, we have to try to integrate all of the subjects for them in Spanish class.

My mentor teacher has set up a system to kill two birds with one stone by integrating science into our literacy block. We are currently working with natural resources and how humans benefit from them. We have a science read aloud which then follows with an activity that focuses on both phonics and science. For example, we recently went on a scavenger hunt and found some natural resources outside our school, when we returned inside the students were able to identify the beginning sounds of each word. 

It does take a lot of effort especially because sometimes we do not have our resources in Spanish so there is a lot of translating, but it is so worth it in the end!

I hope this helps inspire some of those who are struggling with integrating science into the curriculum especially for the lower grades.

Yessica, you are certainly on the right track. If you use trade books to springboard science experiments, you can usually find them translated into Spanish. I suggest looking at the Picture Perfect Science Books in the NSTA store. Your cooperating teacher may get more ideas using them.
I did a bird beak activity with Pre-K last year and it was so much fun. It is similar to Bird Beak Buffet. The children were learning about animal adaptations. I posted pictures of 4 native birds, Pelican, Roseate Spoonbill, Cardinal, and I can't recall the other one. I made a trip to a dollar store and bought 6 pairs of salad tongs to represent the Pelicans beak, clothespins for the Cardinal, and spoons for the Spoonbill. (Six of each item so there was enough for six groups to each have the 4 different types of "beaks".) I got chip clips for the 4th bird. Then we used Chex Trail mix, and little single serve cups for the birds' bellies. Each group had a pan with ChexMix on it and they tried to scoop up whatever their "beaks" would hold and put them in the cups. Afterwards we looked at the different items in the Chex Mix and described how the beaks helped the birds to eat. Of course, the little ones ate their Chex Mix while we discussed it.
