Changes in the Ecosystem
Tue Mar 06, 2018 2:54 PM
I am a student teacher in a 5th grade classroom. I am planning on teaching a science lesson on changes in the ecosystem. I have a few ideas on how I plan on going forward with this lesson. I have tried to find some good resources/books to go along with this topic but have come up short. If anyone has any resources that they would like to share, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Almira! One thing I did with my students was study the aquatic ecosystem of a small stream close to the school looking for macroinvertebrates up to minnows and later added Trout in the Classroom. A neat activity was to find a leaf pack in the stream and collect it, divide it up in small exam trays and pick through the leaves. We had a small digital field microscope the kids used to view the critters and we had an ID sheet from our state Fish Commission. After the kids catalogue the critters, you can determine how healthy the ecosystem is based on the sampling of macroinvertebrates. And its fun. Try this https://leafpacknetwork.org/
Best of Luck!

Hi - one of our Montana State University graduate students created a classroom activity on this topic. Out here in the Rocky Mountains, the kids understand elk, so depending on where you live, you may have to modify that part.
It is called Scat, Transects and Changing of the Seasons. She did this activity with 4th, 5th and 6th graders.
Hope this helps!

You might consider some of these resources in NSTA collections on this topic
Here is one about ecosystems
There is a sciguide of lessons though for middle level might be adaptable for 5th grade.
Check out this journal article and the reviews to see if it meets your needs.
