TEKS 2.9A Plants/Animal basic needs
Tue Feb 06, 2018 9:43 PM
Hello! I am currently in student teaching in a 2nd grade class room. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on ideas/fun activities I could use to teach about plant and animal basic needs to my 2nd grade class?
I am doing a 5E lesson plan so if anyone has any suggestions for that as well, I would be so appreciative. :)

Depending on how long the scope for plants is, you can try a classroom plant project with a jar and some seeds. Have the students learn how plants grow and leave it in a window sill (if there is a window in the classroom). If it's a shorter objective, you could always take the class outside, have them observe and find some plants, leaves, trees, etc. and then come back in and learn the parts.
Don't try any of that for animals though. For animals' basic needs, just start off with seeing if any of them have any pets and go from there.

These are great ideas! Thank you!
I talked to my mentor teacher and we decided to do an activity on animal adaptations and why animals adapt, etc. I am having my kids put one mitten on and leave the other hand bare, and stick their hands in ice cold water. They will tell the differences they felt in their hands and say what their "adaptation" was to the cold water and compare that to other animals. I am excited to see how this activity plans out.
