Along with what has already been posted, I created a collection of resources regarding teaching science through trade books. Please note that these include resources for K-12, so not middle school specific, but do give a large list of texts that you can use. Check it out here:
Any other novels in specific that people have had success with?

How about The Martian (Andy Weir). There is a classroom edition (bad language removed) available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Martian-Classroom-Novel-Andy-Weir/product-reviews/0804189358

I also did a quick search, and this website has a bunch of potential novels. You'd have to take a look at what they offer and decide if any are useful.
I've done some work in my classes with the classroom edition of The Martian and students responded really positively! I also really like Will Alexander's novels Ambassador and Nomad, but they're more science fiction than science.

You could do, Chasing Space by Leland Melvin. It's a wonderfully written memoir that will inspire students to perhaps pursue a career in science.

Your post caught my eye because I am always looking to expand my book collection for my future classroom! I haven't read this book yet but I have heard great things about it. It's called "Life As We Knew It" by Susan Beth Pfeffer. I've attached a link that provides the cover of the book and a quick synopsis of the story. Hope you've gotten some great suggestions that your kids will enjoy!
