I have heard about this from others in many districts. I am fortunate. I teach fifth grade math and science in a school where classes are differentiated or where we switch classes. I often feel that time is limited for science and social studies instruction because reading and math take priority; however, we manage to implement science instruction. I would have a difficult time accepting a positio...

Small group instruction works best for me when I am teaching physical science concepts because there is a lot of experimentation that can be done for little cost. I find it hard to do much small group instruction during life science concepts; however, we frequently use elbow partners for peer to peer feedback. Adding a cast of characters to my teaching repertoire has helped to gain students' atten...

5 Atomic Structure Scipack
Do not let the title intimidate you! This has been my favorite Scipack of the thirteen that I have completed thus far. The visual models, interactive activities, and clear audio presentation of the material takes a complicated subject and makes it simple to understand. Doing this has motivated me to further study the structure of an atom. This is the first Scipack that I have given a 5 star rating. I definitely recommend increasing your content knowledge by studying and completing Atomic Structure.

4 Constructing and Revising Models
Constructing and revising models as a method of teaching and engaging students in science is an effective strategy. It would greatly benefit educators and students if these practices were begun even before the next generation science standards are adopted. Students are more apt to listen to any explanations I have after they have created a model of their own design. Any misconceptions can then be cleared up and the students' designs can be revised. This was an interesting article regarding an interesting topic. I would definitely recommend this to my fellow grade 5 science colleagues.

5 Rocks SciPack
I really enjoy the SciPack format for learning. I can go back and review material if I did not fully understand the concept. This particular SciPack gives the teacher a much better understanding of rocks and the processes used to change them from one type to another. A worth while activity for those who teach Earth Science.
