I am struggling with my co-workers, admin, county, state wanting to use standardized tests and making them mandatory. I don't teach that way with labs and projects and use rubrics and other ways to formatively assess them. How do other teachers address this? Our state does not have high pressure testing but it still reflects and then this year they can use scores in our evaluations now.

5 Abstract becomes fun
This article describes how to use the battleship game to illustrate probability, The Hoberman sphere and the molecule lay out of solid liquids and gasses, and doll furniture to review ratios. I really like the statement of the author that using everyday fun items make daunting concepts real and interesting to the students.

5 having a ball
This article uses cars, track, slinky, and bouncy balls to teach average speed, acceleration, wave lengths, and the types of materials affect bounces. Each activity has it's own page complete with procedure and assessment questions to lead the discussion on the activities.

5 Fun with wind ups
This article was great since it told exactly what items would be needed to complete this activity along with a sample of what to give the students. The write up included procedure and data chart that can be used in class directly as is and no need to even change it.
