Current Events are excellent ways of keeping learning relevant. In the recent weeks, we have seen Earthquakes, Tsunamis, and Hurricanes. I have used the Earthquake that generated a Tsunami in one of my lessons last week. Although it didn't go great, my students were engaged and they all had personal experiences that they could contribute to the discussion of plate tectonics and how Tsunamis and Ea...

Thanks for the information on interactive notebooks in science class. I have heard about interactive notebooks and may have glanced through a math one a few years ago, but I have not made this a practice in my classroom yet. I think its because I do not know much about interactive notebooks to begin with. I would love to see pictures of secondary science and math samples! Do any of you have some y...

There are so many different ways that Humans have negatively impacted the environment. When I was child, there was a cartoon on television that helped make me more aware of my actions would hurt the planet. (I think the Cartoon was Captain Planet?) The reason that I bring this up is that I have seen a shift in the lifestyles of students. Many students feel that the occasional recycling that they ...

3 Lots of Information
1. What are some key points from the SciGuide that made an impression/impact on you? Severe weather has always intrigued me, especially since we don't usually have very much. I was excited to see that SciGuide was broken up into themes converving weather that I wanted to learn more above: Hurricanes, Tornadoes, and Thunderstorms. Each Theme addressed the background information of each type of severe weather as well as how to prepare for them. I was happy to see that preparing for a storm was part of the SciGuide because despite the scientific aspects behind a storm, safety is relevant no matter what age or interests. 2. How could you utilize this SciGuide in your teaching? I really liked the links and resources provided in the hurricance section. I intend to use the "Hurricane Strike" activity with my students to model how to prepare for a storm and what to be aware of after. 3. What are some suggestions for improvement in the SciGuide? Because there was a recent thunderstorm over the weekend, I was hoping to implement the lesson provided in the SciGuide. I was disappointed when part of the lesson required a video - "Thunderstorms - Nature's Fury" which I had no access to.

4 Great, Relevant Resource
1. What are some key points from the SciGuide that made an impression upon you? The SciGuide helped me to take into consideration the financial costs of being environmentally conscientious. Alternative energy forms such as solar, wind or water energy are great but are also very costly. I also liked the resources provided to help students understand human impacts and how reducing those impacts would be beneficial. "How Big is Your Footprint" is one of the activities found in the SciGuide that I intend to use with my students to allow them to be aware of their own contributions to the environment. 2. How could you utilize this SciGuide in your teaching? As written above, I will use the activity "How big is your footprint" with my students so that they can see that they make an impact. 3. What are some suggestions for improvement in the SciGuide? I think the organization of the material could be a little better. Its fairly difficult to navigate. Other than that, I think the information and resources provided in the SciGuide are great and absolutely relevant.

5 Solar System
I thought this SciGuide was great! The SciGuide was instrumental in helping me to transition the content I learned in the Solar System SciPack to knowledge I could teach to my students. This SciGuide provided me with an overview of what I learned in the SciPack and helped me to better understand the material. I think the SciGuide did a better job of getting the content across to me because it seemed to be more to the point. It also seemed to much more organized and filtered out information that was a bit more specific while still providing links to that information under the additional resources links. The themes that this SciGuide separated into seemed to mirror the SciPack which I thought was very good because it made it easier for me to follow. Although this SciGuide was primarily for Middle School, the lesson plans provided were very clear and could be easily implemented with my 9th grade students. I wish I had looked at this SciGuide prior to creating and implementing my lesson plans that dealt with the Solar System.
