Shontell Davis

This is my 10th year teaching science and I feel that I have been doing a disservice all this time. I began working with students in the science department and just LOVED IT!! I've worked with high schoolers (started) and middle schoolers (currently), and the middle school has been the most fun. I like knowing that I’m sending a more knowledgeable group of students the high school way. Reflecting on my teaching experience, I realized that I spent more time on the delivery of the material and less on the structure and purpose. My goal is to find a balance between delivery, structure, and purpose. I want to be more effective and knowledgeable about the disciplines taught on the middle school level.

I was just schleduled a class of students where the percentage of EL is at 85% in 6th grade. Would it be too lower level if I utilized materials that had more diagrams and simple pictures in them like foldables all the time? And if so, what would be the best way to assess the outcome of their understanding?

I need to teach about the relationship between Sun, Moon, and Earth. I would like to get some ideas of how to start this. I believe that I should start with the layer of the atmosphere, move into seasons then go out to into space. I want to start this Wednesday of next week with only three and half weeks of time to cover this. Please help!

This scipack help correct some of the concepts I believed to be true. As I was going through this, so many ideas of how to convey this information in a animated way to my 6th grades are flooding my brain. I had to grab a note pad to jot down the ideas as I was reviewing the information.
