My goal is to become an elementary school teacher and hopefully specialize in language arts and reading. Through this membership I hope to gain a better understanding of science as a whole as well as effective ways to teach it.

I am also very interested in this topic and safe water.  I am currently writing a 2 week unit plan for a group of students to test water from their homes and school and then to create a water purification system.  Any ideas for water testing and water testing kits?  Also, has anyone ever done anything like this?  If so, I would really appreciate any pointers.  Thanks!

I also love the idea of a science notebook.  One idea for a younger grade to get them used to the idea could be to create the pages for them and print them out and then bind them to create a makeshift notebook for the kids.  Then, you could transition them into using a real notebook once they are used to the formatting and the idea of making observations using a notebook.

I think that science at home can definitely be a realistic expectation for students.  There are so many easy things that you can have your students do that require very little effort, time, and supplies.  One idea would be to have students collect and bring in samples from their homes, backyards, or neighborhoods to test in class.  You could do things like rocks, soil, leaves, water, etc.  Anoth...

5 Amazing Article!
I absolutely loved this article! Not only did it teach students about habitable and uninhabitable parts of the Earth, but it did it in such a creative way. I also really liked how the teacher incorporated other subjects into this lesson like math. One thing that especially impressed me with this teacher which is something that in today's day and age teachers must always be thinking about is the fact that he checked for allergies before beginning the activity. Overall, I would recommend this activity and article to all Elementary and Middle School teachers.

5 Great STEM Activity
I really enjoyed this article because of its integration of STEM and the fact that it has a greater goal in mind, which is helping the environment. I love that the teacher had the students write to a real life engineering team to help them decide which filters would work best. I also really liked the level of in depth conversation that the activity produced because the kids were so invested and motivated by this project. Overall, I would definitely recommend this article to any elementary school teacher or parent.
