Julie Waymire

I am a wife and mother of two fantastic children. I have earned a B.A. in Psychology and an M.Ed. in Counseling. Now that I know what I really want to do when I grow up, I am working towards my M.A.T. at McKendree University in Lebanon, IL. I enjoy spending time outdoors boating or hiking with my family. When I have moments to myself, I do yoga and read.

5 Learning About Matter
As a teacher-candidate, I am looking for science lessons that seem within my reach once I'm in my own classroom. While I don't know what grade I will be teaching, the lessons provided in this article are broken down so that they can be applied to K-2 and 3-5. The topics/standards are the same in that they both take a look at Matter and Its Interactions, but the way the lessons are taught are geared towards the appropriate age groups. K-2 investigates which materials are best for soaking up water, are more flexible, and are most abrasive. Grades 3-5 investigate how different powders (found around the home) react when mixed with certain liquids. If needing to purchase materials, they should be low cost. Overall, I believe students of all ages will enjoy these lessons on learning about matter and I feel these are lessons I can easily execute.

5 List of Books as Resources
This list of books is organized by discipline and is easy to quickly review/search. A brief description of each book is shared which will make it helpful when deciding which book is most appropriate for my lessons.. I think this will be a great resource once I have my own classroom.

5 Integrating Science and Literacy
This article provided practical ways to embed literacy into a science lesson. It was modeled on the 5E approach and discussed how to integrate the two subjects in a way that made me feel I could actually do it in my own classroom! I really enjoyed reading this article and recommend it to others.
