As a teacher you need to be consistent with the rules you establish in the classroom. The rules apply to every student in the class. If you want the class to take the rules seriously, then you can't let one student do something that another student would get in trouble for. If they see consistent reprimands, other classmates are less likely to try to "get away with" the act that they were about to...

Can anyone recommend engaging activities focusing on Life Science geared towards fifth grade? I was thinking of doing an experiment where you extract DNA from wheat germs, but I'm not sure if it is appropriate for fifth grade. I didn't learn about DNA until high-school but am not sure what is being taught in fifth grade science.

I am a student teacher and we were recently going over the planets. The resources we were instructed to use were 2012 documents. In the documents it stated that Pluto was the ninth planet from the sun. I thought Pluto was changed to a "dwarf planet". Has anyone else found this in science books that they use or was the document I used just faulty? Would the paper say that pluto is a planet so we do...

5 Extremely beneficial
My weakest area is the solar system when it comes to science. Starting at a small concept, and then building that concept to a bigger one, was very beneficial. It allowed me to see the solar system as a whole. I especially enjoyed the guided questions that were in the scipack while you were reading. I loved the fact that the scipack included video and audio. Every student learns differently. It was very helpful for me to see a quick clip that summed up the information on an idea. I recommend this resource to any teacher who may feel uneasy before teaching a lesson on the universe!

5 Why re-invent the wheel
One concept that I look forward to when beginning to teach is having an unlimited amount of resources. This chapter book is a great example because it provides three different lesson activities for grades from k-5. There is no point in “re-inventing the wheel”, when teachers have tried the lesson, and seen positive outcomes from the lesson. Knowing that I can come back to this resource, and gather ideas for activities to use in the classroom is wonderful! READ, READ, READ THIS CHAPTER!

5 Step by Step guide
I love the fact that this article provides a step by step explanation for how you can plan to incorporate illustrations, models, and map into a lesson plan for elementary students. It is an easy guide to follow to make sure that your students are engaged and talking about their findings. I recommend all elementary science teachers to read this article!
