What area of life science are they working on? I would look at the curriculum and see what they are learning about, or even a quick assessment of what they know. I think making models is always engaging and it makes things more "real" to students. I remember building my own cell in 6th grade science which was fun, I did a cookie (did not eat it though) but I think making models with clay or play-d...

I think that some guidance could be good. Maybe give broad topic suggestions that way students can think of what interests them like nutrition or chemistry or physics and go from there. Also, explaining the process of questioning that leads to an experiment. You want students to be creative but if they have trouble maybe a sit down and give them ideas based on what they are interested in.

I did a lesson with 1st graders last spring on rocks. I decided to read the "magic school bus: rock cycles". I am sure there is a video too but it gives them some good background. Then I had them make pet rocks. You could have them describe features of their rock pet like grainy, the color etc.. and have the class match the "pets" to their description.

5 Suprisingly Helpful
I was not so sure about this when I began to use it but this science guide offers so much information. It is divided up in several fields such as websites to explore, information and even lesson plans. There is a lot of stuff so I would pick and choose what you want to focus on.

5 Seasons
I thought this object was very helpful in explaining Earth's seasons. It was easy to navigate, had good explanations and useful vocabulary. The models were helpful and I especially liked that you can plot temperatures from different latitudes to visualize the differences in places during the year. Great object!
