NSTA Virtual Conference

Assessing Three-Dimensional Learning

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and standards like them are leading to major changes in classroom instruction. Effective assessment is integral to the three-dimensional learning and teaching needed to realize the vision set forth in the Framework for K–12 Science Education and the NGSS. Join NSTA for a virtual conference that explores the assessment of three-dimensional learning.

This four-hour experience opens with a general session by Heidi Schweingruber about the new report from the National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Board on Science Education regarding formative and summative classroom assessments. Participants then have the opportunity to join one self-selected breakout session, from three available, presented by Christopher Harris, Philip Bell, and Jill Wertheim. All sessions will be archived to allow all registered participants the opportunity to watch on-demand, at a later time. The last session will offer perspectives on the development of statewide assessments aligned to three-dimensional learning and some glimpses of what those new assessments may look like.

Whether your state has formally adopted the NGSS or has adopted similar three-dimensional standards, this virtual conference offers a strong foundation for teachers of all grades regarding the assessment of three-dimensional learning.

At the end of the virtual conference, participants will be able to:

  • Construct an explanation of how three-dimensional assessments are different than traditional assessments.
  • Communicate a process for developing three-dimensional assessment tasks.
  • Analyze assessment tasks to determine if they effectively measure learning of all three dimensions.
  • Describe how states are addressing the need for three-dimensional assessments.

All educators registered to the virtual conference will receive access to the conference archives to watch later on demand. A certificate of attendance/participation is available for a modest fee. Please see the registration page for details.
