is the perfect course for science teachers interested in learning more about the
topic or for those who would like to refresh their knowledge. Two graded, graduate-level

In order to accommodate busy summer schedules, the five live meetings of the course will be condensed to three weeks' time. The course will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Eastern time, beginning Tuesday July 17, 2012. This price includes access to the five live meetings and archives, the instructor’s
PowerPoint presentations, a discussion forum, and the required course materials:
SciPack, SciGuide, two Journal Articles, and Force and Motion book.
- At the end of the course, all participants will have the opportunity to pass a final
assessment and print a certificate from NSTA demonstrating their understanding and
proficiency of the content.
- Educators are encouraged to seek approval in advance from their district for continuing
education credits that may be ascribed for participating in this online short course.
Course Details
The NSTA Online Short Course: Force and Motion covers
the concepts of speed, velocity, acceleration, force, mass, weight, and Newton's
Laws of Motion and their applications. This online course is based on the NSTA Press
publication Force and Motion: Stop Faking It! Finally Understanding Science So You
Can Teach It written by Dr. William Robertson.
The presenters will guide participants through easy-to-understand explanations and
facilitate discussions that will enhance teacher knowledge of common physical science
concepts. In addition, participants will contribute to asynchronous weekly discussions
and complete suggested reading assignments from the Force and Motion e-book, journal
articles, and NSTA’s Force and Motion SciPack and SciGuide.
Participants should plan to spend between 40-45 hours on this online course, including
time spent attending live Web sessions. This Online Short Course is designed for
educators of grades 3–9.
