Science is ultimately about explaining the phenomena that occur in the world around us. Recent reforms in science education have focused on how phenomena should be used during instruction. This conference will focus on how using phenomena effectively during instruction and assessment can promote learning for all students across the K-12 spectrum. The four-hour experience will begin with an all-group presentation led by Dr. Okhee Lee. This presentation will be followed by a parallel breakout session with examples of using phenomena for elementary, middle, and high school teachers. The last session will be an all-group session about using phenomena in assessment, led by Dr. Sara Cooper. In between sessions participants will enjoy fifteen-minute breaks to rest and to move to the corresponding virtual room. All sessions will be archived, allowing all registered participants the opportunity to watch the presentations on-demand, when convenient.
By the end of the virtual conference, participants to be able to:
- Engage in an evidenced-based argument on how the use of phenomena in science instruction promotes equity
- Explain the different the differences between an anchor phenomenon and an investigative phenomenon
- Analyze a phenomenon using criteria to evaluate its likely effectiveness in promoting student learning
- Construct an explanation on how phenomena can be used in assessment
