From Astrobiology to Zoology: Igniting Students’ Interests in Science Careers

This Web Seminar, sponsored by Sally Ride Science, took place on April 30, 2008,
from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Eastern Time. Presenting were Dr. Karen Flammer, Research
Physicist at University of California in San Diego and Senior Vice-President at
Sally Ride Science and Julie Miller from Olathe District Schools in Kansas. This
web seminar focused on strategies that teachers can use to ignite students’ interests
in science careers.
This web seminar was the first of two developed as a follow-up to the Sally Ride
Science Symposium that took place at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education
in Boston, Massachusetts. The presenters shared strategies that teachers can use
to engage their students in conversations about science careers. The Web seminar
was designed for educators of grades 6-9.
Twenty-eight (28) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and Virginia. One participant attended the program from Argentina and another from Puerto Rico. Seminar participants received one of NSTA’s SciGuide for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

- "Enjoyed seeing different approaches to identify the qualities of a scientist.”
- “I enjoyed the chatting on the side while listening to the presenters. We were
able to hear what the presenters had to say and get instant response from
our fellow
watchers.”
- “I learned about some of the resources available to teachers that help our students
explore careers in science.”
- “This (NSTA Web Seminar) is the most technological thing I've done on a computer
and it was really easy and user friendly.”
