What Is ExploraVision and How Can I Use It In My Classroom?
|
This web seminar took place on September 12, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern
Time. The presenters were Eric Crossley, Director of Science Education Competitions
at NSTA, and Sara Lepkofker, a science teacher in Duluth, Georgia and coach of successful
ExploraVision teams. In this program, the presenters provided an overview of ExploraVision
and gave guidelines for forming teams of students to enter the competition.
The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from
the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on
the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library,
neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.
This was the first program in a series of web seminars focused on the ExploraVision
competition. During the presentation, Mr. Crossley introduced participants to the
history and components of the competition, then shared information about the prizes
that teams can potentially win. Ms. Lepkofker talked about her experience coaching
students and discussed how ExploraVision can be tied into the classroom. Ms. Lepkofker
also shared a sample timeline that she had used to guide her students through the
process. Web seminar participants then had a chance to check out the ExploraVision
website.
Thirty (30) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the
presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of California,
Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New
Mexico, New York, South Dakota, Texas, and Washington.
Seminar participants received one of the NSTA SciGuides. A certificate
of attendance was deposited into participants' My PD Record and Certificates
area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of
the program.
Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the web seminar:
- “I feel that the web seminar helped to explain the details of ExploraVision
in a way that the web site does not.”
- “Love the interactive way of this webinar.”
- “Interesting program, good introduction.”
- “I am the STEM coordinator for my school and this fits nicely into my vision
for our school.”
Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions,
and a job well done!
