Inspire Your Students to Solve the Challenges of Space |
This Web Seminar took place on September 30, 2010 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern
Time. The presenters were
Sharon Bowers, Mark Clemente, and
Todd Toth. In this Seminar, the presenters gave
an overview of the James Webb Space Telescope mission. They also talked about how
schools can compete in the NASA Engineering Design Challenge, an opportunity for
high school students to work cooperatively as engineers and scientists to solve
problems related to the James Webb telescope.
The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from
the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on
the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library, neatly organized
under the My Resource Collections tab.
This program introduced educators to the NASA Engineering Design Challenge and its
focus on the James Webb Space Telescope. In the seminar, Mr. Toth described the
mechanical construction of the telescope and talked about the information scientists
hoped to collect. Mr. Clemente compared the work of scientists and engineers. Ms.
Bowers discussed the Engineering Design Challenge and explained how to engage high
school students in the competition.
Twenty-six (26) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and
Wisconsin. Two participants attended the Web Seminar from locations outside the United States: Romania and Qatar.
Seminar participants received one of the NSTA SciGuides. A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants My PD Record and Certificates area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.
Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:
- “Current knowledge. A lot of new information for me. Great examples of the process
of science. Increased appreciation for Space work being done and the possibilities
of the future...”
- “Excellent opportunity for inquiry based collaborative challenge.”
- “It helps keep me current. I am not yet certified but want to be current with
whatever subject they throw at me.”
- “The web seminar was relevant to me because I love learning about space and
want to pass it on to my students so they can become enthusiastic about the topic
as well.”
Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
