NGSS Core Ideas: Earth’s Systems

Dr. Jill Wertheim Dr. Jill Wertheim is Program Director for Assessment Research and Synthesis at the National Geographic Society. Her role at NGS has focused on developing a report for the National Science Foundation on assessment for K-12 geography. This project involved working with a national blue-ribbon committee to evaluate the state of the field, making recommendations about how to implement those recommendations, and developing an assessment framework for 21st century geographical sciences knowledge and skills. She also has served as an evaluation advisor for projects at National Geographic and at NOAA, and as a scientific reviewer and instructional design reviewer for numerous projects at National Geographic. Prior to working at NGS, Dr. Wertheim was a Research Associate at AAAS Project 2061, where she performed research on student misconceptions around earth science topics, as well as developed assessments for research on students’ ideas and instructional materials, and evaluated items, instructional materials, and standards. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geology from Middlebury College and a PhD in Geological Sciences from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
