Free PD Resources and Tools for Educators

The Learning Center home page This Web Seminar took place on December 16, 2010 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Presenting was Flavio Mendez, Senior Director NSTA Learning Center. In this Seminar, Mr. Mendez gave a brief overview of the Learning Center resources and talked in depth about the new tools available for teachers including the new ‘badge’ system and live, online help.

Flavio Mendez gave an overview of the NSTA Learning Center, focusing on how the resources could be used to enhance teacher’s professional development. The site has over 5,800 resources available. Mr. Mendez allowed the audience to experiment with simulations from the SciPacks and talked about the next ‘Pack’ to be released. The audience members were asked to create Learning Center profiles, add items to their Learning Center libraries, and view their ‘points’. Mr. Mendez also talked about the new tools, including the live, online, Learning Center support as well as the new ‘badge’ system and Community Forums.


Thirty-one (31) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont and Wisconsin. Two participants joined the presentation from locations outside of the United States: Columbia and Northern Marianas.


Seminar participants received a one year subscription to the NSTA’s SciPack of their choice and will also be rewarded with the forthcoming SciPack on cell division. A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants My PD Record and Certificate area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.
