NSTA Learning Center Update and Free PD Resources

This Web Seminar took place on March 23, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Presenting was Flavio Mendez, Senior Director NSTA Learning Center and Leisa Clark, Director of e-Learning Production. In this Seminar, Mr. Mendez focused the presentation on the new Learning Center resources and tools including the new ‘badge’ system and live, online help. Ms. Clark added details about the new SciPacks and Science Objects.

The PowerPoint, related resources from the NSTA Learning Center, and web links from the presentation are now contained in the above resource collection. Clicking on the collection link will place it in your Learning Center, My Library, neatly organized under the My Resource Collections tab.


Flavio Mendez talked about new tools in the NSTA Learning Center, focusing on how the resources could be used to enhance teacher’s professional development. The site has over 6,000 resources available. Ms. Clark led the audience through one of the new simulations from the Characteristics of Elements SciPack. The audience members were asked to create Learning Center profiles, add items to their Learning Center libraries, and view their ‘points’. Mr. Mendez also talked about the new tools, including the live, online, Learning Center support as well as the new ‘badge’ system and the Community Forums in addition to answering a variety of participant questions.


Fifty-nine (59) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin. In addition, to participants joined the program from locations outside of the United States: Germany and Turkey.


Seminar participants received a one year subscription to the NSTA SciPack of their choice. A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants My PD Record and Certificate area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

  • “Walking us through the different resources and how to download was awesome. I look forward to checking out all the FREE stuff and will inevitably purchase items too.”
  • “I serve on the Science Task Force in my district and needs assessment indicates that teachers want access to more science resources...this fits the bill.”
  • “Now that I know more about how the learning center works, I think it will be an extremely helpful resource for me in the future.”
