Earth Then, Earth Now: Our Changing Climate

NSTA is partnering with Sally Ride Science, (SRS), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), to present an exciting Symposium for middle school and high school level educators (grades 5-12) on the topic of Global Climate Change. This event is a blended professional development opportunity including this face-to-face symposium at the National Conference on Science Education in New Orleans, LA, followed by two NSTA Web Seminars and a discussion listserv to extend the interactions between the participants and symposium presenters. Attendance to the Symposium requires conference registration.

Educators display one of their creations at a recent Sally Ride Science Symposium in Detroit, MI. Program Overview

During this half-day Symposium government agency scientists and education specialists from SRS, NOAA, and USFS will talk to the audience about the basic science behind our understanding of climate change, and global impacts on the atmosphere, ecosystems, and oceans around the world. The conference will draw upon the latest science to present the story of our changing climate and will include presentations by prominent scientists, hands-on activities, and current ideas for facing our climate challenge and creating a healthier planet. The presenters will perform activities that enhance the participants' knowledge and serve as models for activities the teachers can do with their students in the classroom. All participants will receive educational materials from SRS, NOAA, and USFS funded programs.

The Earth Then, Earth Now: Our Changing Climate symposium promises to advance your understanding of the Earth's global climate systems; provide resources for teaching students about climate change; and help you fire up your student's enthusiasm for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

A drawing of door prizes will take place at the end of the program. Refreshments will be provided. Graduate credit may also be available. To receive graduate credit, participants must pay a nominal fee and complete an action plan and a lesson plan.
