Mapping the Moon: Simulating LOLA in the Classroom
All web seminar participants use online tools that allow them to mark-up presenter's slides or share desktop applications in addition to engaging in chat with others online and answering poll questions

Mapping the Moon, how exactly do we explore the moon? Two Web Seminars explain the art of lunar mapping, remote sensing and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The first seminar took place on Tuesday, April 22 with presenters Susan Hoban, Senior Research Scientist at the University Maryland Baltimore County’s Goddard Earth Science and Technology (GEST) Center and Don Higdon, Senior Instructional Designer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s GEST Center. This presentation focused on the topic of topographic maps, the concept of resolution and the LOLA instrument aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The second seminar took place on Tuesday, May 13 and this session allowed participants to program a robot to move from its landing site on ‘lunar land’ to another predetermined site. Working in teams, the participants designed instructions for the robots then worked with presenters to see if their instructions worked. These seminars were designed for educators of grades 4-12.

Each web seminar is a unique, stand-alone, program. Archives of these web seminars and the presenters’ PowerPoint presentations will be available on this web page. Learn more about the features of the Web Seminar and read answers to frequently asked questions from participants.
