Mapping the Moon: Simulating LOLA in the Classroom |
This Web Seminar, sponsored by the NASA, took place on April 22, 2008, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Eastern Time. Presenting was Don Higdon, a Senior Instructional Designer at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Assisting Mr. Higdon on the chat window was Dr. Susan Hoban, NASA Astronomer, who works with the Goddard Earth Science Technology Center also at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. The presentation focused on the topics of topographic maps, the concept of resolution, and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’s LOLA instrument.
This web seminar was the first of two related to the NASA Symposium: Mapping the Moon: Simulating LOLA in the Classroom that took place at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in Boston, Massachusetts. The presenters reviewed the concept of spatial resolution as it relates to topographic maps. With the help of the participants, a landing site was selected for a simulated mission to “Lunar Land.” The Web seminar was designed for educators of grades 4-12.
Thirty-eight (38) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of Arizona, California, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Other participants attended the program from Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, and New Zealand. Seminar participants received a one year subscription to one of NSTA’s SciGuide for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.
Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:
- "Interesting seminar, resolution topic was relevant and important.”
- “It was fun and the technology really allows educators from across the
globe to interact with the professionals on the subject matter. Well done!
Keep them coming!”
- “I loved the fact that it was interactive, and also that it was free considering
the high caliber of people teaching!”
- “This was my first and I will be attending others. The ability to connect to the
rest of the world is wonderful.”
Thanks to the participants and the presenters for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
