All web seminar participants use online tools that allow them to mark-up presenter's slides or share desktop applications in addition to engaging in chat with others online and answering poll questions

This Web Seminar, sponsored by the NASA, took place on April 24, 2008, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Eastern Time. Presenting from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Texas were Jaqueline Cortez, Business Specialist and Education and Outreach Coordinator for the 21st Century Explorer Project, Vickie Kloeris, Manager of the International Space Station Food System, and Lisa Neasbitt, Educator Lead for the NASA Sports and Exploration, NASA 21st Century Explorer, and the NASA Fit Explorer Projects. The presentation focused on the topic of Food for Spaceflight.

This web seminar was the first of two related to the NASA Symposium: 21st Century Explorer – Today’s Knowledge for Tomorrow’s Explorer that took place at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in Boston, Massachusetts. The presenters talked about food for spaceflight, past and present. They also did an overview of the 21st Century Explorer Educational Package of the same title. The Web seminar was designed for educators of grades 3-5.

Twenty-one (21) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of Idaho, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming. One participant attended the program from Puerto Rico. Seminar participants received a one year subscription to one of NSTA’s SciGuide for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:

  • "The interaction was fabulous. The presenters answered all questions and
    were excellent communicators.”

  • “I enjoyed hearing from the people who know the most about food
preparation, like Vickie! It was interesting to learn about the shuttle and the
    ISS from her!”

  • “This was just so well thought out for the classroom - the work was
done - I can walk in tomorrow and unzip it and have fun with the kids!
    Super job!”

  • “This (web seminar) is a great way to keep current with new ideas and
    information from NASA.”

Thanks to the participants and the presenters for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
