Effects of Space Flight on the Human Body
|
From Houston: Exercise!
The first of two Web Seminars on the Effects of Spaceflight
on the Human Body was held on Thursday, June 2, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern
time. The session was presented by Bill Amonette
and Monica Trevathan, from NASA Johnson Space Center.
The session started with a general overview of the Web Seminar tools and how they
can be used to facilitate interaction between the participants and the presenters.
Nineteen participants were present in addition to the presenters, and the NSTA staff.
Educators represented the states of Texas, Georgia, New York, New Jersey, Florida,
California, Kansas, Nevada, Louisiana, Arkansas, and New Hampshire
Bill started by sharing some basic information and definitions about bones. In particular,
he focused on trabecular and cortical bone. Then he talked about the changes that
astronauts' bones go through in microgravity. He highlighted the importance of exercise
as a way to keep bones healthy and strong. What does this mean to teachers and students?
Well, teachers can use the excitement of human spaceflight as a hook to teach students
the importance of exercise in their daily lives. Exercise is not only good for astronauts
- it is good for all of us!
Monica finished the presentation by sharing some NASA resources from NASA Connect
and NASA Explores that teachers can use in the classroom. All participants received
a copy of the DVD and instructional materials for attending the session.
Throughout the presentation there were several opportunities for interactions among
the participants and presenters - answering poll questions, chatting, stamping,
marking, and interacting verbally among each other and with the presenters.
Here is what some of the participants had to say at the end of the session:
- "This was fantastic! I will use this information to enhance my teaching in 8th grade
Earth Science for the Astronomy Unit. Thanks for all the freebies!!!!! I hope you
keep doing these web seminars."
- "This was my first experience with this type of presentation/interaction and it
was great! I am really looking forward to more. Thank you so very much!"
Thanks to the participants, Bill and Monica, for the learning opportunity, the interactions,
and a job well done! Join us for the second Web Seminar on Thursday, June 23, at
6:30 p.m. Eastern time, on the topic of Nutrition. The speaker will be Dr. Sara
Zwart from NASA Johnson Space Center.
