Effects of Space Flight on the Human Body

Nutrition!
The second of two Web Seminars on the Effects of Spaceflight on the Human Body was held on Thursday, June 23, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. The session was presented by Sara Zwart and Monica Trevathan from NASA's Johnson Space Center and it focused on the importance of nutrition as it relates to spaceflight.

The session started with a general overview of the Web Seminar tools and ow they can be used to facilitate interaction between the participants and the presenters. Twenty-three participants were present in addition to the presenters, and the NSTA staff. Educators represented the states of New York, Kansas, Alabama, Maine, Georgia, California, Washington, Florida, New Hampshire, Michigan, Indiana, Texas, and Hawaii.

Sara started the presentation by engaging the teachers in a discussion about the importance of proper nutrition for our bodies on Earth and for human space exploration. She later identified human body systems that are affected by inadequate nutrition (on Earth and in space). She finished her portion of the presentation explaining some challenges in nutrition and food for human exploration and long duration spaceflight, like missions to the Red Planet. How do astronauts deal with food storage and trash on three year missions? During the presentation, participants asked many questions about health, nutrition, vitamin K, and vitamin D.

Monica ended the presentation by sharing information about some electronically-available resources that NASA has available for teachers to use with their students in the classroom. All participants received a copy of the latest educational poster for attending the session and completing he evaluation form.

Throughout the presentation there were several opportunities for interactions among the participants and presenters - answering poll questions, chatting, stamping, marking, and interacting verbally among each other and with the presenters.

Here is what some of the participants had to say at the end of the session:

  • "This was my first web seminar to participate in. I benefited significantly from the information given this evening. I am the science resource facilitator for K-8 teachers in my district. When school resumes, I will inform our teachers of this resource."
  • "I feel that I learned a lot about vitamin questions I had before the web seminar. I even got my wife and 21 year-old son to listen to part of the seminar. Next time I will be using a family intercom so I can have my family learn more."
  • "Great presentation. Based on the presentation, my interest in nutrition in space has grown considerably. Great topic for my sixth grade. Thank you very much! Sara's knowledge/passion is especially contagious."

Thanks to the participants and presenters, for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done! Thanks also to the NASA Explorer Schools Program for sponsoring this event.
