An evening about Inquiry!
The second Web
Seminar on the topic of Picture Perfect Science Lessons was held
on Thursday, May 26, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The session was presented by Karen Ansberry and Emily Morgan, authors of the NSTA Press
publication
Picture-Perfect Science Lessons - Using Children's Picture Books to Guide Inquiry.
Here is what some of the participants had to say about the session: "Karen and Emily
are so knowledgeable, clear and comfortable with the material! They could even sing
and joke while presenting! The tech went so smoothly! With all the interactive means
it was very personal. Thank you for all the work!" Another participant said: "I
hope that you can have Karen and Emily again next Fall. They really present great
usable material. I really enjoyed it."
The session started at 6:30 p.m. ET with a general overview of the Web Seminar tools
and how they can be used to facilitate interaction between the participants and
the presenters. Five participants attended the session in addition to the presenters,
Karen Ansberry and Emily Morgan, and the NSTA staff. Educators represented the states
of Texas, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and Alaska.
Karen and Emily started the presentation with three poll questions to assess the
participants' prior knowledge of inquiry. They followed these questions with a discussion
of several myths educators have about inquiry. Then they proceeded to present to
a slide with some "mystery pellets". This action provoked increased interactions
between participants and presenters! Participants wondered: "What are these pellets?"
"What can you learn from them?" "Where do they come from?" Karen and Emily shared
with us that these pellets are related to owls. In summary, the lesson was a perfect
way to model the process of inquiry.
Emily and Karen concluded their presentation talking about the five essential features
of inquiry: questions, evidence, explanations, evaluation, and communication. Throughout
the presentation there were several opportunities for interactions among the participants
and presenter - answering poll questions, chatting, and selecting the best answer
from selected lists of statements.
Thanks to the participants and presenters - Karen and Emily - for the learning opportunity,
the interactions, and a job well done!
