Robotic Exploration of Mars!
The first of two Web Seminars on NASA Robotics was held on Thursday, June 16, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. The session was presented by Sheri Klug, Director of the Mars Education Program at Arizona State University. Some of the participants included members of the Solar System Educators and Ambassadors program.

The session started with a general overview of the Web Seminar tools and how they can be used to facilitate interaction between participants and presenters. Forty-nine participants were presenting attendance in addition to the presenter and the NSTA staff. Educators represented the states of New Jersey, Indiana, New York, Connecticut, California, Alabama, Florida, Kansas, Illinois, Texas, Michigan, New Hampshire, Georgia, Hawaii, Virginia, and Arkansas.

Sheri started the presentation by engaging the teachers in a discussion about the similarities and differences between Earth and Mars. Then she proceeded to give the audience an update on the current NASA missions exploring Mars: the Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Odyssey, and the two Mars Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. The third portion of Sheri's presentation was about the next mission to Mars, which is scheduled to launch in August, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Sheri finished the presentation by sharing information about some Mars-related resources and programs that NASA has available for teachers to use with their students in the classroom. All participants who attended the session and completed the evaluation form received a copy of the latest Mars DVD.

Throughout the presentation there were several opportunities for interactions among the participants and presenters; these included answering poll questions, chatting, stamping, marking, and interacting verbally with each other and with the presenters.

Here is what one of the participants had to say at the end of the session: "Any workshop I've attended with Sheri has been excellent. This was another great example." Another participant said: "Thanks you made Mars come alive again! Great information and valuable to share with teachers and students! This is truly interactive and moderator Flavio was superb too! Thanks for making this possible today! Looking forward to next week!" A third participant said: "My first Web Seminar, Excellent! Thanks for inviting the Solar System Ambassadors."

Thanks to the participants and Sheri, for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done! Join us for the second NASA Robotics Web Seminar on Wednesday, July 13, at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time. The speaker will be Dr. Jennifer Rochlis from NASA Johnson Space Center.
