SCOUT!
The second of two Web Seminars on NASA Robotics was held on Wednesday, July 13, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. The session was presented by Dr. Jennifer Rochlis, Robotics Engineer at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. Some of the participants included members of the Solar System Educators and Ambassadors program.

The session started with a general overview of the Web Seminar tools and how they can be used to facilitate interaction between the participants and the presenters. Seventeen participants were present in addition to the presenter and the NSTA staff. Educators represented the states of Kansas, Pennsylvania, New York, Alabama, Tennessee, California, Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Illinois, and Hawaii.

Jen talked about a project she works on, the Science, Crew, Operations & Utility Testbed (SCOUT), a crew-able rover capable of exploring the surface of the Moon and Mars. The planned rover will have a crew of two and will be capable of traveling up to 6 miles. The rover can also be controlled via remote control.

It was interesting to see and learn something about the future. The capabilities of SCOUT are extraordinary, much better than the Lunar Rovers used during the Apollo missions. Throughout the presentation there were several opportunities for interactions among the participants and presenters; these included answering poll questions, chatting, stamping, marking, and interacting verbally with each other and with the presenters.

Here is what one of the participants had to say at the end of the session:

  • "This was my first seminar and I was really impressed! Wish I had heard about these sooner. "(I wish the SSA had the same kind of web seminar software). Can't wait for them to start back up in the fall."
  • "Great!!! Excellent ability to explain things to those not as educated in her area as she."
  • "I absolutely LOVED these. I want to do them again and again."

Thanks to the participants and Jen for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
