Arctic and Antarctic Living Systems
|
This Web Seminar, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, NASA and NOAA, took place on January 24, 2008, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Eastern Time. Presenting was Dr. Craig Tweedie, Assistant Professor at the University of Texas, El Paso, where he is jointly appointed in the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering Program. Dr. Tweedie gave an impressive presentation on the implications and consequences of global warming and climate change on living systems in the Arctic and Antarctica.
This Web Seminar was the third of three related to the IPY Symposium that took place at the NSTA Area Conference on Science Education in Birmingham, Alabama. In this seminar, the presenter discussed in detail, numerous implications of global warming and climate change on terrestrial living systems in the Arctic and Antarctica. The Web Seminar was designed for educators of grades 5-8.
Thirty-eight (37) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming. One participant tuned in from Antarctica and another from the North West Territories. Seminar participants received a one year subscription to one of NSTA’s SciGuides for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.
Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:
- “I am teaching the Life Science section of our text right now, so this
presentation gave me information I can use with my students tomorrow
- climate, habitat, ecosystems, adaptations, loss of habitat, how animals
adapt/are not able to adapt to major changes.”
- “I found the explanation of recycled carbon and methane very informative.
We usually don't think of methane having an effect - only carbon dioxide.”
- “This (Web Seminar) was great - probably the best I've participated in.”
- “I thought Dr. Tweedie was an excellent presenter. He has a thorough understanding of this field and was able to respond to all the questions.”
Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
