Successful Strategies for Involving Parents in Education |
Decades of research point to parent involvement in a child’s education as the single
most important factor for academic success. During this half-day symposium, Lawrence
Hall of Science (LHS) educator Laura Tucker and NASA Explorer Schools Coordinator
Joan Sanders talked to teachers about the importance of parental involvement in
their students’ education. The presenters also performed activities that enhanced
the participants' knowledge about the topic of involving parents in education and
served as models for activities the teachers could do with parents at their own
schools. All participants received educational materials from the Lawrence Hall
of Science and NASA, including the Parent Partners Handbook from LHS. Parent Partners
is a guide for educators who want to increase the role of parents and other adult
caregivers in their children’s education and foster a climate of cooperation and
understanding.
This symposium was held at the NSTA Area Conference on Science Education in Denver,
CO. The program was designed for teachers of grades K-6.
