NSTA is partnering with NASA to present an exciting Symposium for grade 4-9 educators about space exploration, to be held at the NSTA Area Conference on Science Education in Detroit, MI. This event is a blended professional development experience including this face-to-face learning opportunity at the conference followed by two NSTA Web Seminars to extend the interactivity between the participants and NASA. Attendance to the Symposium requires conference registration.

Program Overview

At a recent NASA Symposium in St. Louis, MO, participants explored the theme of living and working in space. The topic of space exploration fires the imagination of students and can be a powerful and inspiring teaching tool for teachers. This half-day symposium will focus on the biological and physical aspects of humans living and working in space as NASA completes the International Space Station, returns a human presence on the moon and looks forward to Mars and beyond. This symposium will provide you with tools, experiences, and NASA opportunities to help you incorporate the excitement of space exploration into your school program. You will learn about NASA human space flight missions and education products that you can use with your students. Topics include an engineering design challenge and plant growth experiment, a physical fitness challenge, and a reading challenge, among others. NASA scientists, engineers, and/or education specialists will share their expertise and assist participants in linking this content to engaging, hands-on, and inquiry-based classroom activities. Walk away with a wealth of knowledge and related educational materials.

All participants will receive educational materials and information about resources that are available at the NASA website. Fantastic door prizes will be raffled at the end of the program. Graduate credit may also be available. To receive graduate credit, participants must pay a nominal fee and complete an action plan and a lesson plan.
