Igniting Students’ Interests in Science Careers
|
NSTA is partnering with Sally Ride Science, a science content company dedicated to supporting girls’ and boys’ interests in science, math and technology, to present an exciting Symposium for middle school and high school level educators (grades 6-9) on science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (STEM) careers. This event is a blended professional development opportunity including this face-to-face symposium at the Area Conference on Science Education in Portland, OR, followed by two NSTA Web Seminars and a discussion listserv to extend the interactions between the participants and Sally Ride Science staff. Attendance to the Symposium requires conference registration.
Program Overview
This half-day symposium focuses on the wide variety of STEM careers available, the many paths to becoming a scientist, and the vibrant men and women involved in science today. It also gives educators tools for encouraging students to think about their interests, future careers, and map out their short- and long-term goals. Sally Ride Science scientists and education specialists will share their expertise and involve participants in activities they can take back to the classroom. These activities all address National Science Education Standards, are hands-on, and inquiry-based.
All participants will receive educational materials and information about resources that are available at Sally
Ride Science. A drawing of door prizes will take place at the end of the program. Refreshments will be provided. Graduate credit may also be available. To receive graduate credit, participants must pay a nominal fee and complete an action plan and a lesson plan.
