NASA/NSTA Web Seminars:

National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Anti-matter Eyes on the Gamma-ray Skies
All web seminar participants use online tools that allow them to mark-up presenter's slides or share desktop applications in addition to engaging in chat with others online and answering poll questions

This Web Seminar took place on November 12, 2009 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Presenting was Dr. Lynn Cominsky, Chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department at Sonoma State University (SSU). Dr. Cominsky talked about the Fermi telescope and the vision of space that is pictured by gamma ray ‘eyes’.

This is the first, of four, Web Seminars sponsored by NASA that promote the International Year of Astronomy. In this program, Dr. Cominsky presented information on the observations of Fermi and some general education about the electromagnetic spectrum. She also gave an overview of some high energy physics with explanations about anti-matter and pair conversion, and illuminating topics such as locating pulsars and the search for dark matter.

Thirty-two (32) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of Alaska, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. Two participants joined from countries outside of the United States: Romania and Qatar.

Seminar participants received one of the NSTA SciGuides. A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants My PD Record and Certificates area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:

  • “Updates for Fermi and presentation images for education.”

  • “I can explain better to the students about some of the up-to-date detection NASA is doing and the objects being detected--celebrate Yr. of Astronomy.”

  • “Will be teaching electromagnetic spectrum to the students in few weeks.”

  • “Relates directly to topics under current study; and good to keep updated about current research for myself.”

Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
