NASA/NSTA Web Seminars:

National Aeronautics and Space Administration
A Century of Cosmic Surprises
All web seminar participants use online tools that allow them to mark-up presenter's slides or share desktop applications in addition to engaging in chat with others online and answering poll questions

This Web Seminar took place on December 8, 2009 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Presenting was Dr. James Lochner of the Universities Space Research Association and NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. Lochner traced some of the questions scientists have had about the universe, and described the tools they used to answer those questions.

This is the second, of four, Web Seminars sponsored by NASA that promote the International Year of Astronomy. In this program, Dr. Lochner talked about how over the past century, the model we use to describe the universe has changed from static to expanding to accelerating. He shared information about how evidence was gathered to determine the state of the universe and addressed a number of questions on Dark Matter and Dark Energy.

Forty-four (44) participants were present at the live Web Seminar in addition to the presenter and NSTA staff. Participating educators represented the states of Alaska, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin. Six participants joined from countries outside of the United States: Brazil, Canada, Romania and Qatar.

Seminar participants received a one year subscription to one of NSTA’s SciGuides and a certificate of attendance was deposited into their My Transcript area in the NSTA Learning Center for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.

Here are some comments provided by the participants at the end of the Web Seminar:

  • “I just enjoyed learning about it.”

  • “The subject was very interesting: dark energy, dark matter.”

  • “Updates I can share w/ students; cosmic times website.”

  • “Hit all the high points of current Cosmological Research.”

Thanks to the participants and the presenter for the learning opportunity, the interactions, and a job well done!
