GPS and Geodesy for Dummies: Do You Know Where You Are? |
Presenters:
Dr. Dru Smith
Dr. Dru Smith has been the Chief Geodesist of NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey (NGS)
since 2005. He first entered NGS in 1995 after receiving his Ph.D. in geodetic science
from The Ohio State University. From 1995 until 2000 he performed gravity and geoid
research, resulting in the GEOID96, CARIB97, MEXICO97 and GEOID99 geoid models.
In 2001 he spent a year working for the Executive Secretariat of the Interagency
GPS Executive Board, helping shape government GPS policy. In 2001 he returned to
NGS and focused his research on using the CORS network to model the ionosphere.
Dr. Smith is a member of the Institute of Navigation, the American Geophysical Union,
the International Association of Geodesy and has previously served on the Board
of Directors for the American Association for Geodetic Surveying.
Galen Scott
Galen Scott, Team Lead for the COASTAL Program within NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey,
coordinates high-accuracy elevation surveys for habitat restoration and other applications
in the coastal zone. He works with CO-OPS, NOAA’s tides and water levels office,
to provide infrastructure, tools, and trainings to tie together geodetic and tidal
datums to support elevation critical applications at the land/water interface. Galen
started at NOAA as a Presidential Management Fellow in 2003, after receiving a Master’s
Degree in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins University.
Casey Brennan
Casey Brennan has been working as a Program Analyst with NOAA's National Geodetic
Survey in the Communications and Outreach branch since July of 2004. Casey received
his bachelor's degree in History and Political Science from the University of California
Santa Barbara in 1999, and his Master's Degree in International Environmental Policy
from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in 2003. Casey's work primarily
is to help communicate the importance of geodesy and positioning to any and everyone
who will listen.
Bruce Moravchik
Bruce Moravchik is an education specialist in NOAA's National Ocean Service (NOS).
He leads the development of NOS's Discovery Center, a series of innovative online
materials for students and educators that convey the research, technology, and activities
of the National Ocean Service. Bruce has worked with scientists and educators across
NOAA to develop original written and multimedia content for the Ocean Explorer,
Coral Reef Information System, National Marine Sanctuaries, and Marine Protected
Areas, Web sites. Prior to coming to NOAA he established and ran a marine and environmental
studies program at a private high school in Rhode Island, working with teachers
and students on coastal ecology, aquaculture, and habitat restoration. He has also
taught oceanography onboard the 125 foot tall ship Westward for the Sea Education
Association; studied the behavioral ecology of lobster and crab populations in Rhode
Island and Maine; and conducted research in coral reef ecology in the Red Sea.
