Living and Working in Space: Habitat |
NSTA is partnering with NASA to present an exciting Symposium for grade 4-9 educators
on the topic of habitats! The Symposium will be held at NSTA's National Conference
on Science Education in St. Louis, MO. This event is part of a blended professional
development experience that includes this face-to-face learning opportunity at the
conference as well as several online experiences-a discussion listserv and two NSTA
Web Seminars-that extend the interactivity between the participants and NASA.

Program Overview
This full-day symposium focuses on the topic of habitats. Living and working in
space requires life-sustaining habitats - from space suits to space stations to
habitats on the Moon or Mars. How will NASA construct habitats to support extended
human activity in space or on the Moon and Mars? How can NASA provide what is necessary
for humans to maintain physical health and quality of life in space or on the Moon
or Mars? What kinds of ecosystems can be established in habitats in space or on
the Moon or Mars to support humans? These questions provide an engaging context
for students to learn about ecosystems, health, human biology, and plants. The student
investigations and design problems provide opportunities for extension and evaluation
of fundamental concepts. NASA scientists, engineers, and/or education specialists
will share their expertise and assist participants in linking this content to engaging,
hands-on, and inquiry-based classroom activities. Walk away with a wealth of materials,
ready to launch your students into new worlds of learning.
All participants will receive educational materials and information regarding NASA
resources that are available electronically. A raffle of fantastic prizes will take
place at the end of the program. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Graduate credit may be available at an additional cost to participants. To receive
graduate credit, participants must pay a nominal fee and complete an action plan
and a lesson plan. All Symposium participants will receive a certificate from NSTA
stating the number of seating hours (8 hours).

In addition to the face-to-face Symposium at the Conference, two Web Seminars featuring
the presenters of Living and Working in Space - Habitat will be held in following
weeks. Participants are also invited to join with the presenters in a moderated
discussion listserv.
Location
The Symposium will take place in Room 232 of the America's Center Convention Center,
in St. Louis, MO. Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel and
housing if necessary.
Cost/Registration
Participants will pay a $44 advance registration fee or $49 onsite at the Conference.
This fee covers the cost of the refreshments and folder materials. Travel, meals,
lodging, general conference registration, and graduate credit fees (where applicable)
are the responsibility of participants. Register today!

Web Seminars
Two Web Seminars after the face-to-face program in March. The Web Seminars begin at 6:30 p.m. Eastern
time.
Web Seminars are free, interactive, live sessions of online professional development.
The 90-minute sessions feature NASA, FDA, NSF, and NOAA scientists, education experts,
and NSTA Press authors. You do not have to attend the Symposium in order to participate
in the Web Seminars.
