External Resource: Introduction to the Atmosphere

External Resource

Seven classroom activities are linked to a brief overview of the properties associated with the atmosphere. The overview and activities include the following general concepts: the earth's atmosphere is a very thin layer wrapped around a very large planet; two gases make up the bulk of the earth's atmosphere; based on temperature, the atmosphere is divided into four layers: the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere, energy is transferred between the earth's surface and the atmosphere via conduction, convection, and radiation; ocean currents play a significant role in transferring heat poleward. Topics include: atmosphere, layers of the atmosphere, troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere, conduction, convection, and radiation, the Gulf stream, and the water cycle.

This resource contains rich content information to help new or newer teachers to atmosphere develop a deeper understanding on atmosphere. There are also small animation and graphics to help teachers/students gain a deeper visual understanding. Finally, at the end of the introduction there are several links to lesson plan ideas. Overall a very rich resource - in content, graphics and lesson plan ideas in relation to atmosphere.

After a brief explanation about the atmosphere --properties, structure, processes and heat energy transfer—seven links are provided for different activities that explain about the atmosphere. Some of the activities include ones about the water cycle, radiation, conduction and more. This is a great site for ideas to use when teaching about the atmosphere
