It has been almost 20 years since the National Science Education Standards (1996) and the Benchmarks for Science Literacy (1993) were published. Now, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are well underway, with a scheduled first draft release for comment in early 2012. With the release of the new standards, high schools students educated in the new standards will begin to arrive in colleges with different experiences, expectations, and abilities. This article goes on to state that college-level science courses will have the challenge to prepare new teachers to teach at the level and focus of the new standards for its ultimate success.
