Special clothing is worn by “community helpers” such as police officers, nurses, firefighters, cafeteria workers, dentists, and waste management workers as they do their jobs. The special clothing allows workers to be safe. Therefore, exploring how hats help community workers do their jobs can be a way to introduce the idea of how the shape or form of an object is related to how it functions. The objective of this month’s lesson is to explore the relation between a hat’s structure and function.

Children use hats to understand how their structure of that hat is designed for a function. Exploring community helpers such as fireman, policemen and others involve exploring the hats they wear and the reason they wear those particular hats. This can lead into a discussion of form and function in nature.

This is a great lesson with hands on learning inquiry. I also think students will really enjoy the activity! Ashburn describes how students investigate differing hats and their purposes. They also learn to determine the role of form and function relate to meeting the hat's purpose. The students are actively engaged as participants in the lesson. I believe the lesson is a great opener to discover functionality. Possible extensions could include designing and constructing a hat to do its defined purpose. Then testing to see if it does its job. This could include some data collecting too. Also, students could bring in a hat to talk about it’s purpose and test it. I wish Ashburn had included some of her thoughts about extensions on the lesson.
