Techniques for rich, authentic asssessment are revealed through a polymer gel spheres project.
The project has students developing research questions using the information they have learned in previous activities. While I wonder about the conceptual level for the age of students, I could see where this is truly high level, high engagement project.

This article starts off with an excellent description of an effective teacher! The description would be a great beginning to any teacher workshop on science.
The project described in this article goes through several chemistry activities that build on each other. Students are given the opportunity to make choices about what to do in each experiment. The final activity was used as an authentic assessment. Students were given crystals that form gel spheres when placed in water. Then they generated research questions that they wanted to investigate. This was an excellent assessment that provided the teacher with information on how well the students has grasped the concepts in the unit.
