Examining data provides a unique opportunity to have students work actively with various technologies, such as computers or graphing calculators. Students can import data into spreadsheet software, execute mathematical calculations, create data graphs, and use this material in reports to present the results of their inquiry. Reinforcing the use of technology in a classroom environment, as well as generating reports to communicate information, is another goal of the National Science Education Standards. Defining these objectives reinforces the link between science and math and brings relevance to both topics. The following activity example details how students can explore and try to make sense of data.

This is a great article about how a teacher inspired by a local disaster from river improved his classroom unit about rivers. He collected real time data and took pictures of the event. He engaged his students by using online data from the USGS, USDA and other sources about weather conditions, river flow, plant growth and more. He created an imaginary river that changes seasonally especially in the spring after snow melts. The whole activity is presented including river data scoring rubric to use with the assignment.

This article is a write up a of a lesson that involves using a local natural disaster current event as a starting point for an activity using actual data to learn about the interrelationships of Earth's systems. This could be applied anywhere and the article also gives suggestions of websites to use to find local data for your area.

This article provides a thorough explanation of how to do this lesson in your classroom. I like how there is a math/science/history connection as well as the opportunity for students to connect with students in a different school or state.
