The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about the functions carried out by plants and animals for maintaining life. The task specifically seeks to find out if students recognize that plants and animals share several common life functions, even though they are seemingly very different organisms.

Once again Page Keeley delivers a spot-on formative assessment to flush out student misconceptions on the functions carried out by plants and animals to maintain life. This formative is a nice segue into a study of cellular function because instructors can make the construction between the functions of living organisms and the cellular organelles involved in the function. For example, students could trace the function of respiration to the cellular level. Kelley also includes the pedagogical implications of the curriculum topic by grade levels and ties the instruction into the National Education Science Standards.
