Implementing STEM in my classroom | Posted in STEM
I believe STEM is best implemented by allowing creativity, expression, and collaboration in the classroom. In all grades, but especially in the lower grades, I have noticed that students often learn best from each other. I would begin implementing STEM by designing activities around group work and/or students teaching each other.
In math, you can have students share how they got their answers step by step so that others can see and hear their peer's thinking and strategizing. In science, a great idea is having students work on group projects to "research" about the weather, water, and other Kindergarten TEKS. At the end of the week or lesson, the groups can share their findings with the class. I hope my ideas can help you implement STEM education in your Kindergarten classroom!
Periodic Table | Posted in Physical Science
I have used a few techniques that have really helped. One of them is Periodic Table Battleship. This was even fun for the Chemistry students. I also have an interactive Periodic Table that they can log in with their cellphone and pull up realistic examples of the elements. I have also found interactive tables online. I also have written the elements out on index cards and they have to split into groups and the first team to lay them out correctly on the floor is the winner!
Field Trips | Posted in General Science and Teaching
I am currently a student teacher in 2nd grade. We recently took a field trip to our city's Children's Museum. There were tons of different hands on activities for them to engage in over a broad subject matter. However, they did have some wonderful areas for science specifically. One part of our Children's museum has a place called "force works" where the children can use basically a large cauldron that rushes water through the entire exhibit! The children can see how the force of the waves move whatever the put in the cauldron.
In addition to this, there were areas where the children were able to see the life cycle of certain animals, specifically chicks.
These are just a few of the science-related exhibits there are, but it was a great way to get the students more engaged and interested in how science works!
