Safety Culture

Hello,

I am a faculty member at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University researching laboratory safety culture, education, and best practices. If you use chemicals for laboratory experiences or demonstrations as part of your instruction (middle and high school), we would appreciate your participation in our 16-question survey.

• Research Question: How have the gaps in secondary school safety culture been closed in the last decade?
• The Team: interdisciplinary research team from ERAU with expertise in multiple science and safety fields
• The Project: online survey of middle and high school science instructors
• Benefit(s) to you: no direct benefits
• Assurances: anonymous responses, Institutional Review Board deemed "exempt"

You can access the survey here: [https://schoolsafetyculture.questionpro.com]

We hope that you will consider participating in the study. Do not hesitate to reach out with questions. A copy of the Informed Consent (no signature required) is attached to this message and is also available within the survey. If you wish to opt out of this research, simply do not engage with the survey.

Hi Emily,

I think your study is very timely.  Once complete you should share your findings here so we can see what you find.

Developing a culture of safety in the high school lab is very important. On a similar note, Dr. Ken Roy posted a link to ACS New Chemical Lab Safety Series for High School in the listserv today.  Since not everyone who uses the Learning Center is a subscriber to the listserv, I thought I would share.  Here is the link to the entire playlist.  I certainly enjoyed watching them.  Not only are there videos designed for teachers, but there are also ones specifically designed for students.

How do others fostered a culture and climate of safety in their labs?

Ruth - Unfortunately, I didn't get enough responses for analysis. I am working with my co-researchers to come up with another plan for collecting data.

Thank you for sharing the link - I am not on the listserv!

Emily,

I am so sorry to hear that you didn't have enough responses.  Hopefully you will get more responses in the future.
