What are some engaging or interactive ways to teach 3rd grade students about the formation of soil?

Paxton, I'm sure this may seem like a tough lesson, and it can be at first. However, one of the first things I did with my 4th graders was to create a compost bin near our outdoor garden. If you don't have the room to accomplish that, try making a smaller version of a compost bin in a 5 gallon bucket inside the classroom. Make sure you don't add any kitchen scraps that contain protein like meat or else you may attract critters you don't want in your classroom.
It will take a while but there is a lot of data you can collect while the compost decomposes.
