Earth Day Science Activities

Hi all, Does anyone have recommendations for middle-school science activities for Earth Day? Currently we are in our life-science session, learning about taxonomy, body systems and ecology. By Earth Day we should be on ecology topics and I'd like to have some enrichment projects for my students. I have been horrible at planning around special days and themes, and would like to try this one LOL. Thanks!

Hi Cheska,
It is a rather L O N G thread, but it is so full of wonderful activities and ideas; it may be worth your while to read through it: Environmental Science. One of the activities that I provided on that thread may ft the bill for you. It is called the Earth as an Apple and I have it included in an Earth Day Collection that I have started. There is also a video clip showing it, but I think doing the actual demo in front of the class with a real apple is so much more effective here. Perhaps showing the video of Earth as an Apple as a review later...as it ends up being an advertisement for an insurance company.

Cheska, Arlene started a new thread about Earth Day, too. She has listed gobs of great resources, so I will link this thread to hers. That way we have two great threads started on this topic. Here's the other thread: Earth and Space Science > Earth Day April 22, 2012

Just in time for Earth Day, check out the American Chemical Society has put together a video that reveals the journey recyclable materials take beyond those blue curbside bins. Take a tour of a typical recycling center to see out how these facilities sort the mountains of recyclables they receive everyday. http://www.bytesizescience.com/index.cfm/2012/4/19/Beyond-the-blue-bins-The-journey-of-recyclable-materials

I love the Story of stuff project A 20-minute animation of the consumerist society, narrated by Anne Leonard, to view online or download. Includes footnoted script, credits, blog, and resources. http://www.storyofstuff.org/
