We are huge fans of finding ways to integrate STEM into other subjects. We know that very few elementary schools have the funds for a STEM teacher specialist (but how awesome if they do!!) , so teachers have to find ways to integrate these lessons. We integrate engineering into math and science of course, but also into literature and history. We were invited to share our ideas on the blog "Education to the Core" and just published our ideas for integrating STEM into social studies.
You can check it out at:
Included are lots of ideas and a link to a free downloadable lesson. Enjoy!

No one ever thinks to integrate STEM into other subject areas. Social Studies seems to be the best subject to integrate STEM into because you can use engineering in so many ways. I loved how the article stated that you can use STEM to recreate technology or build structures from past times. I also loved how you could use STEM to solve problems that past cultures faced. This way the children can really have that first hand experience that people of the past had. Thank you so much for sharing this post I will be bookmarking this website to use in my future classroom!

I found this website particularly helpful to generate ideas for building projects: http://www.5eboard.com/
They have all sorts of boards and accessories, and focus on k-12 STEM education. The pieces connect kind of like LEGOs, and can reassemble easily. I'm pretty sure they also have a curriculum or a textbook available too.
I hope this helps!

Thank you for this post! Great hands on and effective activities for students to use in order to grasp the idea of how people lived long ago.

I loved that the article stated that you can use STEM to build structures from the past or to solve problems that people in the past faced. There are so many great ways to integrate STEM into other subjects. One example that I have seen was a simple machine STEM unit integrated with learning about the Great Pyramids and how they were built using simple machines. Thank you for sharing that article!

I am so glad that STEM is starting to be incorporated into classrooms more. I worked for the YMCA over the summer and we had to make lessons and come with activities that inlcuded STEM. I thought it was so interesting that children could be making something so simple like an art project and be learning math all at the same, when they didn't even know it. I am currently student teaching in a secon grade classroom and I am lucky to see STEM being incorporated into many of our lessons. As a future teacher I will definitely try to incorporate into my classroom.

For another way to successfully integrate STEM into other subjects check out our FunScienceDemos YouTube Channel for free demonstrations that can easily be integrated into the classroom or used at home. These are easy to recreate and every demonstration is NGSS aligned. If you enjoy these demos please let us know as we appreciate any feedback.
